Publication requirements
During the eight semesters of their studies, or until the submission of their thesis, the student must publish five peer-reviewed papers with psychological content, related to the PhD research topic.
A valid indicator of connection to the research topic is the first authorship. This is a requirement in the case of the Q-ranked international journal paper and int he case of one more peer-reviewd journal paper, not necessarily Q-ranked. If more than one doctoral student wants to validate a publication as a publication supporting their thesis, the distinctness of the personal contribution must be proven to DEENK.
The required five publications fall into threer (1-3) categories. The following table informs you about how many publications of which publication type a student should accomplish. In the table, a publication ranked lower can be replaced by a publication ranked higher. Therefore, we also specify the maximum number of publications of a publication type in the five publications.

Next the individual publication types are specified:
1. International journal publication in Q-ranked journal: The journal is indexed by the SCIMAGO and/or SCOPUS systems. The journal does not necessarily have to be indexed by psychology, as psychological content is also published by journals from other disciplines, especially in applied fields. Internationality means: it has an international editorial board.
2. International journal publication in a peer-reviewed, not necessarily Q-ranked journal: The homepage of the journal should refer to the status of being peer-reviewed. Two out of the three publication can be published in domestic journals published by the student’s home country, and one out these two can be written in the student’s native language.r
3. Peer-reviewed publication in an edited volume: A publication of at least 20,000 characters. The Psychology Doctoral Program publish every year a conference proceeding consisting of PhD students’ work. This publication fits the category.
Recommendations:
To meet these requirements, the places and forms of publication must be systematically established with the supervisor. Literature reviews are typically written during the two years of the study and research phase. During this period, the doctoral student may be able to present the first partial results of research in studies. In the second two years (research and dissertation part), it is realistic to complete the remaining publications.
The publication requirements must be met before the thesis is submitted for the home defense. A publication is considered completed if it has been published or accepted for publication. Often, a very long time passes from submission to acceptance for publication, which is worth taking into account, and it is worth finding out from international journals – if this type of data is available on the website – what % of submitted manuscripts are accepted, what is the average duration of the first editorial decision, and what is the average duration of the process leading to acceptance for publication.
If the student/supervisor has any doubts as to whether a publication is acceptable for the Psychology Program in a given category, it is worth consulting with the program leader in advance, i.e. when choosing the publication platform.
