Subprograms

“Public Education Research sub-programme:

The Public Education Research sub-programme focuses on the levels of the education systems where students of compulsory school age learn. It includes historical and comparative analyses, and addresses challenges related to student participation, progression, and achievement. It also examines the structure and quality of the education system, its institutional, informal and non-formal settings, as well as the interests and activities of various educational stakeholders - international organisations, governments, school administrators, teachers, students and parents.

Inclusive pedagogical research sub-programme:

The Inclusive Pedagogical sub-programme explores which educational policy initiatives, school culture, and pedagogical environments are most effective in ensuring that learners from diverse social, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds - including those with special educational needs or disabilities - have access to education that best supports their achievement. It also investigates the forms of teacher education and training that can facilitate this process.

Research in Higher Education sub-programme:

The Research in Higher Education sub-programme examines the social and individual impacts of international, regional and national trends and challenges in post-secondary education. It investigates both internal and external factors shaping the development of various institutional types and levels of higher education. Special attention is given to systemic and institutional policies that promote supporting, participation, and success for traditional and non-traditional student populations, along with learning styles and pedagogical practices in higher education.

Research in education and its applications sub-programme:

Research in the sub-programme on applied educational research addresses challenges in the teaching and learning of specific subjects across diverse student populations. It involves historical and international comparisons of teaching practices and subject achievement, innovations in institutional and classroom settings, and factors influencing students' and teachers' perceptions of the learning process. The research also considers how to improve learning outcomes, and examines disciplinary issues in teacher training and professional development.

Adult Education, Vocational Training and Culture sub-programme

As lifelong learning becomes increasingly central, adult education is no longer easily separated from the broader educational system. Nevertheless, its distinct institutional frameworks and growing significance warrant its treatment as a sub-system in its own right. The sub-programme encompasses topics related to adult learning and teaching in a broad sense. Key research areas include adult education policies in public education, vocational education and training, higher education, and culture; the operation of institutional systems; and the roles of participants in formal and non-formal learning. Additional focus is placed on the interaction between education and the economy, the role of local communities in learning, and the transmission of culture - including among specific population and ethnic groups - via mass media and entertainment.”
